Overcoming Classroom Challenges in Ghana at Scale

Ghana’s education system faces extraordinary pressures with extremely large classes, limited resources, and significant gaps in digital literacy. Teachers typically manage classes of dozens—or even over a hundred—students each, making personalized assessment and feedback almost impossible. The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, sought a scalable, user-friendly solution that could efficiently support teachers, even in rural schools with poor connectivity and limited infrastructure.

They needed a solution that was:

  • Easy to adopt, without requiring extensive training.
  • Capable of handling large class sizes efficiently.
  • Functional even in low-connectivity environments.

Milgo’s Tailored Solution: Lightweight, Adaptive, AI-Powered

In partnership with T-TEL (Transforming Teacher Education and Learning) and Google Research, Milgo delivered a highly adaptive AI-driven assessment solution designed specifically for Ghanaian classrooms:

  • Simple, lightweight digital assessments accessible via tablets distributed nationally by the Ministry.

University of Illinois RCT Shows STEM Improvements through Social-Emotional Learning

The University of Illinois at Chicago led a groundbreaking randomized controlled trial (RCT) based on the Azrieli Foundation’s accelerator. The accelerator, in partnership with Milgo, was aimed at integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into STEM education, specifically targeting science curricula. The RCT was directed by Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a globally renowned SEL expert and CASEL board member, and was focused on testing innovative solutions capable of demonstrating measurable improvements in both SEL competencies and academic outcomes among students.

The challenge set for Milgo was ambitious:

  • Improve students' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, school engagement, academic grades, and self-concept in science.
  • Provide rigorous, measurable evidence of impact through a controlled experimental study.

Milgo’s Tailored Solution: SEL Meets AI-Powered Assessments

The team from Reichman University partnered with Milgo to tailor its AI-powered assessment tool, creating a student-friendly iteration specifically for 7th-grade science classrooms and rooted in validated SEL measurement frameworks. The solution provided:

  • Regular assessments enabling students to reflect on their social-emotional competencies and academic engagement throughout the school year.
  • Implementation across randomly selected classrooms in the test country (Israel), with assessments conducted at multiple intervals (October, January, and May) to track progress effectively.
  • Clear, actionable insights delivered through intuitive narratives (“Stories”), empowering students and teachers to identify and support SEL and academic development.

A Rigorous Approach

Throughout the 2022–2023 academic year, six teachers implemented Milgo’s assessments with 126 students fully completing the evaluation cycle. A control group maintained standard classroom practices, providing a robust benchmark to gauge Milgo’s effectiveness.

Transformational Results

Students engaging with Milgo showed remarkable improvements across key SEL and academic indicators, consistently outperforming peers in the control group.

  • Improved Academic and Emotional Engagement:
Unlike peers in the control group, who saw declines in academic engagement and performance over the year, students using Milgo demonstrated increased engagement and bettered their science grades. Milgo effectively reversed a downward trend, making students more invested in their education.

Building Emotional Resilience in Israel’s Schools

Following the traumatic events of October 7th, Israel’s educational community - students, teachers, parents, principals, and counselors - faced extraordinary emotional distress. Reaching those that needed support was paramount. SHEFI, Israel’s National Psychological and Counseling Services Administration, urgently required a scalable and effective solution to quickly assess the emotional state of school communities nationwide, especially in heavily impacted regions. Their goal was to gain swift, actionable insights to guide immediate mental health interventions and resilience-building strategies.

Milgo’s Tailored Solution: The Emotional Check-In Tool

The National Authority for Measurement and Evaluation in Education in Israel, partnered with Milgo to tailor their intuitive, AI-powered emotional check-in tool. The  tool was quickly deployed, featuring:

  • Customized questionnaires for students (grades 4–12), teachers, parents, principals, and counselors, thoughtfully aligned with SHEFI’s psychological frameworks.
  • Inclusive assessments in Hebrew and Arabic to ensure broad community reach.
  • Clear, narrative-based insights ("Stories") at the school level, enabling staff to quickly understand emotional trends and act immediately.
  • Mobile-friendly accessibility, essential for ensuring participation across varying levels of infrastructure, especially in crisis-affected areas.

Swift and Widespread Adoption

The rapid implementation and seamless integration of the emotional check-in tool into SHEFI’s existing counseling network was heavily supported and enhanced by Milgo's hands-on approach to implementation.

Milgo’s dedicated team played a crucial role in driving widespread user adoption, offering comprehensive support through a combination of interactive webinars, personalized training sessions, and in-person workshops. By directly supporting schools during the critical launch period, Milgo facilitated immediate, effective utilization of the emotional assessment tools. The result was a streamlined adoption process that quickly equipped educators across Israel’s education system with essential emotional insights, enabling timely and targeted interventions for their school communities.

Milgo in Action

Itzik Shahar, the principal of the Herzog Comprehensive School at the Branco Weiss Institute was already familiar with Milgo. “I started using Milgo because it is a system that allows me to make data-based managerial decisions with a high degree of flexibility.”

The school began using Milgo’s tailored emotional check-in tool immediately after the war began, and it very quickly proved its value. With data from the teachers’ questionnaire results, the tool pointed Principal Shahar in the right direction.

“There was one teacher that Milgo highlighted with a red asterisk. So I approached her in the teacher’s lounge, where my question of “how are you?” immediately broke her down crying.”

This was an opportunity for Principal Shahar to help the teacher get the support she needed. When she came back to work a few days later, she thanked him for recognizing the state she was in. “I told her, to be honest, it was Milgo that gave me the indication. That’s really when it hit me… the impact it was making.”

Transformational Results

The collaboration between SHEFI, RAMA, and Milgo profoundly enhanced emotional resilience and support in Israeli schools, reaching more than 136,000 students in over 6,200 classrooms.

  • Empowering Open Communication and Effective Interventions:
Half of teachers directly shared Milgo’s emotional reports ("Stories") with students, creating critical conversations around emotional well-being. Furthermore, 78% shared insights with school counselors, directly supporting targeted, timely interventions across diverse communities.

  • Outstanding Educator Approval and Efficiency:
Educators rated Milgo exceptionally high, with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 60%, regarded as "excellent" by EdTech standards. Principals and counselors praised the intuitive design and straightforward insights, noting significant improvements in their ability to identify emotional blind spots quickly and efficiently.

Saves Time and Easy to Use:

Counselors and educational staff testified that the insights helped save time and sharpen their understanding of the emotional landscape in their schools.

Additionally, 76% of teachers indicated their willingness to continue using the solution, underscoring Milgo’s relevance and ease of use.

In Their Own Words

"It allowed people to speak up and write and say things they couldn’t say face to face. It’s very effective, almost on every level, to enforce a true change inside the school in a way that is simple, friendly, and in cooperation with the teachers room."
